About Fairfield County

Fairfield County is located only 26 miles north of downtown Columbia, capital city of South Carolina and 75 miles south of downtown Charlotte; 2 hours east to the coast and 2 hours west to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Rich in history our county name is believed to have originated with Lord Cornwallis, when in 1780-1781 during the Revolutionary War, he and his British Troops wintered in Winnsboro. While taking in the view of the surrounding area from his second floor window, Cornwallis declared “Oh, What Fair Fields, . . ” thus Fairfield County. Water abounds in Fairfield, with the Broad River and Lake Monticello on our western border, Lake Wateree on our eastern border, we are an aquatic paradise. If shopping, high tea and antiques are what you are looking for then the charming town of Ridgeway will suite your fancy. Trains and railroads in your blood, then it’s “All Aboard” at the SC Railroad Museum in Winnsboro. Check out the these and many other interesting and exciting things our county has to offer.
